Vice President Xi Jinping Meets with Myanmar's Commander of the Armed Forces

On November 28, 2011, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, also vice chairman of the Central Military Committee, met with Myanmar's Commander of the Armed Forces Min Aung Hlaing at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi said China and Myanmar are friendly neighbors and have forged profound "Paukphaw" friendship since time immemorial. Myanmar is one of the first countries to establish diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China. "Over the past over 6 decades, the friendship, forged by leaders of the older generations, has endured changes in the international arena," Xi said, adding that the two states have conducted fruitful cooperation in all areas and supported each other on international and regional issues. As Myanmar's good neighbor, good friend and good partner, China will, as always, support Myanmar's efforts in preserving national unity, promoting economic development and improving people's livelihood, he said. He also urged Myanmar to properly settle relevant issues and maintain a sound momentum of development. "China will work with Myanmar to further bolster the comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation," he said.

Xi said, as an important part of bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation, the relations between the two armed forces have been developing very well. Xi proposed the two armed forces to enhance exchanges and deepen cooperation so as to contribute to all-round development of bilateral ties.

Min Aung Hlaing said the people and armed forces of the two countries share profound traditional friendship and the relations between the two countries and their armed forces face new opportunities for development in the new period. He hoped both sides will maintain close friendly exchanges, deepen cooperation and enhance communication and coordination in order to safeguard peace and stability in the two countries and the region and uplift the relations between the two countries and their armed forces to a new level. Min Aung Hlaing reiterated that Myanmar will firmly adhere to the one-China policy and support China's position on issues concerning Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang.

Deputy Chief of General Staff of the PLA General Ma Xiaotian, Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin and other officials attended the meeting.
