Vice Foreign Minister Xie Hangsheng Makes Urgent Representation to the Sudanese Embassy in China on the Attack of Sinohydro Project Crews in Sudan

On January 31, 2012, Vice Foreign Minister Xie Hangsheng summoned the chargé d'affaires of the Sudanese Embassy in China Omer Eisa Ahmed to make an urgent representation on the attack of Sinohydro project site in Sudan and the kidnapping of 29 Chinese workers.

Xie said that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the safety of Chinese citizens abroad and is deeply shocked by the kidnapping and concerned about the security of the 29 Chinese crews. A working group of the Chinese government has been dispatched to Sudan to help with the rescue. China urges Sudan to take into account the bilateral friendly and cooperative relations in general and intensify the rescue efforts through multiple channels, do everything possible to ensure the safety of Chinese workers and make every endeavor to create conditions for their safe release as soon as possible. It also asks Sudan to take effective measures to ensure the safety of other Chinese citizens and companies in the country.

Eisa said that Sudan deeply regrets this incident. The Sudanese government pays high attention to China's concerns and requirements and will try its best to properly handle the incident, rescue the abducted Chinese safely and improve the security of other Chinese people and companies in Sudan.
