2013-04-10 10:13

On the afternoon of April 10, 2013, Zhang Dejiang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), held talks with President of the National Assembly of Ecuador Fernando Cordero at the Great Hall of the People.

Zhang reviewed the growth of China-Ecuador relations. He said in recent years, China-Ecuador relations have entered a new stage of comprehensive, rapid development and are now at a historic peak thanks to the joint efforts of both sides. China appreciates Ecuador's adherence to the one-China policy and its precious support to China on issues concerning Taiwan and Tibet, according to Zhang. As both China and Ecuador are in important periods of their development, there is huge potential for the two countries to work closely, said Zhang. China attaches great importance to developing relations with Ecuador and is willing to work with the country to open up new prospects of China-Ecuador friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation for the benefit of the two countries and peoples. He raised a four-point proposal to this end. First, the two countries should maintain visits at top and other levels, take care of each other's core concerns and enhance political trust. Second, the two sides should expand pragmatic cooperation, particularly in energy, infrastructure and finance, innovate cooperation modes and upgrade the cooperation. Third, he called for closer exchanges in culture, education, public health and tourism so as to solidify the public support for bilateral friendship. Fourth, he also proposed stronger coordination on international issues so as to safeguard developing countries' rights and interests and promote a harmonious world featuring lasting peace and common prosperity.

On legislative ties, Zhang said in recent years, the NPC and the National Assembly of Ecuador have maintained closer ties and cooperation, playing a unique and positive role in building up the friendship between the two countries and their peoples and pushing forward bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation. The new NPC places importance on developing ties with the National Assembly of Ecuador and would like to maintain the momentum of high-level visits, expand exchanges between special committees and members of parliament and exchange more opinions on the building of democracy and legal system, environmental protection and sustainable development. He also called on the two legislative bodies to deepen communications in multilateral legislative organizations so as to make greater contributions to comprehensive development of China-Ecuador friendly cooperative relations.

Cordero hailed China's remarkable achievements under the leadership of the CPC, saying the country's path is successful. Currently, Ecuador-China exchanges and cooperation in various fields have achieved remarkable results and the bilateral relations are in the best period in history. He said Ecuador would like to step up exchanges with the Chinese government and legislature, work more closely in clean energy and infrastructure for mutual benefit and exchange experience on improving people's livelihoods and eradicating poverty so as to inject new vitality into the two countries' common development and the upgrading of bilateral relations.
