Vice Premier Wang Yang Meets with AU Commission Chair Nkosazana Dlamimi-Zuma

On May 24, 2013, Vice Premier Wang Yang of the State Council, as special representative of President Xi Jinping, met with Nkosazana Dlamimi-Zuma, Chair of the African Union (AU) Commission, at the headquarters of the AU in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa during his attendance at the special summit of AU to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

Wang Yang first conveyed the sincere greetings from President Xi Jinping to AU Commission Chair Nkosazana Dlamimi-Zuma as well as Xi Jinping's warm congratulations on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the OAU.

Wang Yang said that the founding of the OAU 50 years ago marked an important event in the history of Africa and the world. The 50 years of development since the OAU's founding have witnessed a more independent, united, stable and prosperous Africa as well as increasingly enhanced status and influence of Africa on the international arena. China sincerely wishes that African countries and the people will further promote the spirit of Pan-Africanism and build up the consensus of African Renaissance on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the OAU so as to make new greater achievements on the road to peace and development.

Wang Yang expressed that China-AU friendship and cooperation are facing new opportunities for development and that China is willing to work together with the AU to improve China-Africa cooperative mechanisms and to strengthen practical cooperation as well as consultation and coordination on international affairs so as to push for continuous and in-depth development of the China-Africa relationship. A prosperous and strong AU ensures a prosperous and strong Africa. China will never change its policy of strengthening solidarity and cooperation with Africa and its position of supporting Africa in seeking strength through unity. He wishes the AU's special summit and its celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the founding of the OAU a great success.

Zuma asked Wang Yang to convey her gratitude and greetings to President Xi Jinping and welcomed Wang Yang for attending the AU's special summit as special representative of President Xi. Zuma spoke highly of the China-Africa relationship and the contributions the Chinese side has made to African development. He expressed that Africa is working hard to transform the mode of economic growth and achieve integration. Africa is looking forward to strengthening practical cooperation with China in various areas and the AU will play a major role in the China-Africa cooperation.

Following the meeting, Wang Yang and Zuma attended the signing ceremony of relevant cooperation documents between China and the AU.
