On December 19, 2013, the 1st High-level Symposium of Think Tanks of China and Central and Eastern European Countries was held in Beijing. State Councilor Yang Jiechi attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.

Yang Jiechi, on behalf of the Chinese government, expressed congratulations on the opening of the 1st High-level Symposium of Think Tanks of China and Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC). He pointed out that the Symposium is an important move to implement the outcomes of the China-CEEC Summit in Bucharest. China-CEEC cooperation is highly complementary with broad prospects. For the next stage, both sides should step up efforts to implement the outcomes of the Summit in Bucharest and to build China-CEEC cooperation into a growth point for China-Europe cooperation. Hope the think tanks of China and of CEE countries will actively offer advice and suggestions.

On behalf of the foreign delegates, Stjepan Mesic, the former President of Croatia, thanked the Chinese side for holding the Symposium. He expressed that China-CEEC cooperation conforms to the interests of all parties. Hope all parties will strengthen academic exchanges to provide more intellectual support for the cooperation.

Prior to the opening ceremony, Yang Jiechi met with Mesic and a number of former political leaders of CEE countries who came to attend the Symposium.
