UNHRC Working Group on the Issue of Discrimination against Women in Law and in Practice Visits China

At the invitation of China, the Working Group on the Issue of Discrimination against Women in Law and in Practice, a Special Procedure of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), paid a visit to China from December 12 to 19.

Vice Foreign Minister Li Baodong and Executive Deputy Director of the National Working Committee on Children and Women (NWCCW) under the State Council Su Fengjie met respectively with the Working Group. Chinese ministries and commissions in charge of foreign affairs, women’s career development, justice, education, social security, sanitation, family planning and others held joint discussions with the Working Group successively.

The Chinese side and the Working Group had frank and open exchanges of views on the development of women’s career in China. The Working Group made positive comments on the protection of women’s rights and interests of China and remarkable achievements thus made, affirmed China’s efforts in eliminating discrimination against women, and put forward advice and suggestions for China to further strengthen relevant work.

The Working Group also went to Shanghai and Yunnan Province to investigate the programs including Women Cadres' School, ethnic villages, and community legal aid and psychological counseling service centers.

The Working Group,established in 2010,consists of five experts. Its main responsibilities are to sort out sound practices of all parties in eliminating discrimination against women and to research and put forward proposals related to eliminating discrimination against women in law and in practice.
