Extending holiday greetings and best wishes to all officers and ratings of the Chinese and Russian naval vessels

On February 6, 2014, President of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin jointly held video talks in Sochi, Russia, with captains of Chinese and Russian naval vessels participating in escorting the shipping of Syrian chemical weapons. They extended holiday greetings and best wishes to all officers and ratings of the Chinese and Russian naval vessels.

Li Pengcheng, Captain of the Chinese Naval Vessel, and Peshkurov, Captain of the Russian Naval Vessel, who are carrying out an escort mission in the Mediterranean, briefed the two heads of state on their escort mission respectively. They said that the Chinese and Russian naval vessels have conducted close cooperation, and have already successfully finished the task of escorting two batches of shipments of Syrian chemical weapons. At the moment, the two naval vessels are in good condition and ready to carry out the next mission.

After listening to the reports, Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin made their remarks respectively to all officers and ratings of the two naval vessels.

Xi Jinping said, on the occasion of the Chinese Spring Festival and the opening of the Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia, on behalf of the Chinese government and the Chinese people, I extend sincere greetings and New Year wishes to you and through you, to your families.

Xi Jinping pointed out, since the end of last year, the naval vessels of the two countries have jointly participated in escorting the shipping of Syrian chemical weapons. This is a joint action of China and Russia based on the authorization from the UN Charter and relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council. I now extend my congratulations to you for the close cooperation between the two naval vessels and the successful completion of escorting two batches of shipments. Wish you every success for the mission, making your contributions to the safe and smooth destruction of Syrian chemical weapons and to promoting a political settlement of the Syria issue.

Vladimir Putin expressed his sincere appreciation to all officers and ratings of the two naval vessels。 He stressed that both Russia and China are actively promoting a political settlement of the Syria issue. The officers and ratings of the two naval vessels assume important responsibilities of guaranteeing the safe destruction of Syrian chemical weapons. He hoped that they will make persistent efforts to do a good job for the escort mission, and commit themselves to safeguardiing international and regional security.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi and others were present.

To implement Resolution 2118 of the UN Security Council and OPCW's decisions on the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria, four naval vessels from China, Russia, Denmark, and Norway jointly carried out the naval escort for shipping Syrian chemical weapons, and the Chinese and Russian naval vessels were put together as a team to carry out the relevant tasks.
