Xi Jinping Meets with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

  On February 7 local time, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Sochi, Russia.

  Xi Jinping said the cauldron of the Sochi Winter Olympic Games will be lit up tonight. The Olympic ideal of peace is highly consistent with the UN's principle of promoting peace for mankind. The United Nations plays an irreplaceable role in responding to the global threats and challenges, and acts as an important platform for strengthening and improving global governance. China actively advocates and implements multilateralism, appreciates the UN's important contributions to promoting world peace and development, and will support the UN and its Secretary-General's work as always.

  Xi Jinping stressed that the development of China cannot be achieved without a peaceful and stable external environment. China will make unremitting efforts in maintaining peace, pushing forward common development and its participation in multilateral systems. China's development will strengthen the force for safeguarding world peace. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will perform its due international obligations, actively participate in the work of the UN in various fields, promote peaceful settlement of international disputes, and contribute more Chinese wisdom and strength to safeguarding world peace and security and to promoting common development of the mankind.

  Ban Ki-moon said that the UN highly appreciates the leading role China has played in coping with various global challenges. Among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, China dispatches the largest number of peacekeepers. The Chinese side has dispatched navy vessels to join the joint escort mission for Syrian chemical weapons and actively participated in the promotion of political solutions to the hot-spot issues of Syria, South Sudan and other regions, which fully demonstrates the great contributions China has made to maintaining world peace and security.

  Meanwhile, Xi Jinping expressed his views on the current situation of Northeast Asia upon request. Xi Jinping stressed, China is willing to make joint efforts with relevant countries for the peace and stability in the region. In order to realize the good neighborly and friendly relations in the region, a correct view of history must be upheld and the post-war international order must be consolidated. The upcoming year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN, as well as the 70th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and the victory of Chinese people’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. The UN is the outcome of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War, and a carrier of earnest expectations of peoples of all the countries for peace. Hope the UN will promote the international community to well organize the relevant commemorative activities

  Ban Ki-moon expressed his hope that Northeast Asia could maintain stability and prosperity. The UN is willing to work together with all the countries to jointly push forward the cause of world peace and development.

  The two sides also exchanged views on issues of the Syrian situation, the situation of the Korean Peninsula, and climate change. Xi Jinping stated China’s principle stance on these issues.

  Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi and others were present at the meeting.
