2014-02-20 16:00

On February 20, 2014, Mr. Li Baodong, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister and Ms Gillian Bird, Australian Deputy Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade co-chaired the 15th Round of China-Australia Human Rights Dialogue. The two sides respectively introduced the new progress they made in the protection and promotion of human rights and had an in-depth exchange of views around a wide range of subjects. The dialogue was positive, frank and fruitful.

The Chinese side particularly introduced the new initiatives aimed at improving the judicial system of protecting human rights adopted by the Third Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee, informed the preparation for the second round report on the Universal Periodical Review of China to be adopted by the UN Human Right Council and included new subjects such as new developments in the area of UN human rights for the first time in the dialogue, injecting new vitalities into the sustainable development of the dialogue. The Chinese side made objective comments on the human rights situation in Australia and expressed concerns over such issues as Australia's treatment of refugees and the situation of indigenous people in Australia.

After the dialogue, Vice Foreign Minister Li Baodong and Deputy Secretary Gillian Bird jointly met with the Australian and Chinese journalists. The Australian delegation will visit State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing and talk with Chinese NGOs on Feb. 21.
