In the evening of March 4, 2014, Chinese President Xi Jinping held telephone talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the request. They exchanged views on China-Russia relations and the situation in Ukraine.

Xi Jinping said, I just held a successful meeting with President Putin in Sochi. It marks a good start for China-Russia relations for this year. Guided by our consensus, the relevant departments of both countries are promoting the cooperation on major projects which of strategic significance. President Putin sent message of condolences immediately after the serious and violent terrorist attack in Kunming, Yunnan Province, and expressed staunch support to China. China is willing to continue and strengthen anti-terrorism cooperation with Russia. I welcome you to visit China in the near future and we work together to push forward China-Russia relations for continuous development at this high level.

Putin said Russia and China have maintained close exchanges and cooperation. He looked forward to another meeting with President Xi Jinping, to further discuss the major issues of common interest.

Putin briefed on the evolvement of the current situation in Ukraine, as well as Russia's position on the issue and its countermeasures.

Xi Jinping stated China's principle position. He pointed out, the situation in Ukraine, going as it is today, seems to be accidental but has the elements of the inevitable. The situation now is highly complicated and sensitive. It is with an impact on the region and overall on the world. We believe that Russia can coordinate with all parties concerned, to push for the political settlement of the issue so as to safeguard peace and stability in the region and the world at large. China supports the proposals and mediation efforts of the international community which are conducive to the ease of the tension.
