On March 24, 2014, President Xi Jinping met with US President Barack Obama in The Hague. Xi Jinping stressed that this year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of China-US diplomatic relationship. Faced with the current complicated international situation, China and the US enjoy broader areas that are under cooperation, in need of cooperation and possible for cooperation. The Chinese side is willing to work with the US side to always adhere to the right course of establishing a new model of major country relationship and to promote bilateral relations for a constant, sound and stable development.

Xi Jinping expressed, since last year, we have kept close communications through various ways, and have reached a series of important consensus, pushing China-US relations to achieve important and positive progress. You sent me a letter a few days ago, saying that you will always be committed to developing a new model of major country relationship between China and the US. I do appreciate this. The two sides should adhere to the principles of non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, strengthen cooperation at bilateral, regional and global levels and effectively manage differences and handle sensitive issues with a more positive attitude and more forceful actions..

Xi Jinping said, this year China and the US both have our own important domestic agenda, and both sides will have a series of important exchanges. Hope that both sides will work together to ensure the success of a new round of China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED), High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE) and Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT), in an effort to achieve more positive results. Hope both sides will accelerate negotiations on the Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT). We urge the US side to pay high attention to and take seriously the concerns of the Chinese side, to ease restrictions on the export of high-technology items for civil use to China, and to provide fair-play environment for Chinese enterprises to invest in the US.

Xi Jinping noted, China and the US should continue to reinforce military-to-military dialogues and exchanges for various aspects and at various levels, deepen mutual understanding and trust, prevent misunderstanding and misjudgments, and carry out more joint drill, joint training program and practical cooperation. I appreciate your explicit denouncement of all forms of terrorism. The Chinese side is willing to work with various countries in the world including the US to continue anti-terrorist cooperation. The two sides should also intensify law-enforcement cooperation in fighting against transnational crimes, chasing criminals, recovering stolen money and other aspects.

Xi Jinping stressed, on the Taiwan issue and Tibet-related issues, the US side should abide by its commitment of respecting China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and no support for activities aimed at splitting China. On the East China Sea issue and the South China Sea issue, the US side should adopt an objective, fair and just attitude, distinguish right from wrong and do more things helpful to promote proper resolutions to the issues and to ease the situation.

Xi Jinping said, the Chinese side has paid high attention to address the challenge of climate changes and has taken a series of major measures in this regard. Both sides should well implement the agreed cooperative projects on coping with climate changes, enhance policy coordination in the multilateral field as well as communications and exchanges with other countries, and try hard to work out solutions acceptable for all parties.

Obama expressed that, over the 35 years since the establishment of the diplomatic relationship, US-China relations have made considerable progress. With increasingly close bilateral exchanges and the interests of the two countries closely connected, US-China relations have become one of the most important bilateral relations for nowadays. He is willing to keep communication with President Xi Jinping on a series of major issues, and jointly promote the establishment of a new model of US-China major country relationship. The US has no intention to damage the stability in China or contain China, and it supports the reform process in China. With regard to the differences and frictions existing between the two sides, the US side is willing to handle in a constructive manner. The US is ready to work with China to send out the positive message that both sides are committed to developing US-China relations.

Obama reiterated that, on the Taiwan issue and Tibet-related issues, the US side respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. This stance remains unchanged. US-China military-to-military relations have recently achieved stable progress. He is in favor of the two militaries to deepen substantial dialogues and practical cooperation. The US is willing to accelerate the negotiation progress of the BIT, so as to bring more opportunities of trade, investment and employment to both countries. The US side hopes to strengthen bilateral coordination and cooperation in climate change and make it a new field of US-China positive cooperation.

Obama again condemned the serious violent terrorist attack in Kunming not long ago and expressed that the US side opposes terrorism of all forms. The terrorism should be strongly condemned wherever it occurs. The US side is willing to continue strengthening the cooperation with the Chinese side.

On the issue of the Korean Peninsula, Xi Jinping pointed out that fruitful negotiation is the only right way to solve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. The top priority now is to resume the Six-Party Talks as soon as possible and to effectively implement all the objectives established in the 9.19 Joint Statement. China has major interest concerns in the Peninsula and is firmly committed to realizing the denuclearization and safeguarding the peace and stability on the Peninsula. The Chinese side is willing to keep close contact and coordination with the US side and other parties concerned.

Obama briefed the stance of the US side and indicated that the US side appreciates the constructive efforts made by the Chinese side to promote peace talks. The US side is willing to maintain contact and coordination with the Chinese side.

Xi Jinping reaffirmed the views and stance of the Chinese side on the Ukrainian issue. He stressed that the Chinese side has been holding a fair and objective attitude on this issue. To promote a political solution to the Ukrainian issue is in the interests of all parties concerned. The Chinese side has raised its own proposals, including the establishment of international coordinating mechanism as soon as possible and all parties not taking actions which would aggravate the tension. The Chinese side supports the constructive efforts made by the international community to ease the tension and remains open to all plans that contribute to the ease of situation and political solution to the issue.

Obama briefed the opinion of the US side. He said that the US side appreciates the stance and principle held by the Chinese side. The US side also values the role China plays and is willing to keep communication and cooperation with the Chinese side.

Both sides also discussed Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection, RMB exchange rate, Internet security, Iranian nuclear issue and so forth. Xi Jinping stated the relevant stance and principles of the Chinese side.

Xi Jinping said, before coming to the Netherlands, my wife and I met in Beijing with your wife Michelle, your mother-in-law Mrs. Robinson and your two daughters Maria and Sasha. We had very nice talks with them. Now they are touring around China. It is believed that their visit would be a friendly, joyful and unforgettable journey. Obama said that he called them and got to know that they were having a very nice time in China. His whole family are very grateful for President Xi Jinping and his wife Mme. Peng Liyuan, for their invitation and generous hospitality.

Xi Jinping thanked Obama for calling not long ago to extend his condolences to China on the incident of loss of contact of the Malaysia Airlines flight and for instructing relevant US departments to participate in search and rescue operations while inform China with relevant sources. The Chinese side will do its utmost to continue the search efforts for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight with the Malaysian side as well as all parties concerned. Obama said that the US side is doing whatever it can to assist in search and investigation.
